The OSTERIO Group responds to IIA's Interpretation of Privacy Policy

Several months ago, we became very aware of the impact that the shrinking economy is having on the financial position of some smaller IIA chapters. One chapter offered to provide their mailing list in lieu of paying our seminar fee just in order to have a seminar for their members and provide CPE.

Due to the fact that the IIA has a published Privacy Policy that states that they "may provide mailing information to other organizations whose products/services are of perceived benefit", and that many chapters publish booklets with all the members contact information in them, we didn't see any problem with this and agreed to waive our seminar fee in return for the mailing list. Please note that The OSTERIO Group's privacy policy states that we will not provide your mailing information to any one (outside of legal requirements).

Because the offer was so successful for that chapter, we offered this "no fee in exchange for mailing list" plan to other chapters, which resulted in several recent seminars. These chapters were very happy to be able to provide a seminar for their members at no cost, other than travel expenses.

Since this was a win-win offer for the chapters and us, we decided to offer the "no fee in exchange for mailing list" option to more chapters, which is the offer we recently sent to several IIA Chapter Presidents/Vice Presidents.

On or about Sep 30, 2002, the IIA sent an email notice to all chapters advising them, as we understand it, that providing a mailing list in exchange for seminar services from The OSTERIO Group is in violation of the IIA's Privacy Policy.

This ruling appears conflicting to us - see "IIA Privacy Policy - Disclosure of Information to Third Parties" at www.theiia.org.

None the less, we are happy to continue to provide seminars for your chapters and we will continue to do everything that we can to keep the costs down so that smaller chapters can still offer quality CPE seminars. We would be happy to hear from you on any way that we can help you. Please e-mail me admin@osterio.com.
